CHICHESTER, ENGLAND — One good reason to hope there will always be an England: the Goodwood Revival.
Imagine a country setting where the smell of burned motor oil mixes with the fragrance of a Guerlain eau de toilette, where mechanics in greasy overalls and neckties tinker with the carburetors of old Jaguars and MGs.
Where Veuve Cliquot is sipped from the bottle. Where ladies parade in faux minks and polka-dot dresses and bright rouge, whilst gentlemen strut about in plucky caps and tweed waistcoats.
Enclosing this retro extravaganza about 60 miles south of London is a 2.4-mile racetrack, where the dominant sounds are the growls and burps of decades-old automobile motors. (There are also the occasional roars of propeller airplane engines, because Goodwood, which was an airfield of the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain, is about old Lancasters and Spitfires as well.)
The annual event, held here last weekend, was created in 1998 by Charles Gordon-Lennox, commonly know in these parts as the Earl of March.
It’s Christmas it’s that time of the year when everyone is in good spirit (literally)! My other hat I wear (toiling, work) is that I drive for that very well known cab company in London called AddLee ( the best) to fund and give me time to persue my other interests (my art is just one of them).
About four years ago I decided to work on Christmas day for no other reason (as there was no public transport) it was an oppertunity to earn some good money! (little did I know that it actually, cost me money)? After various pick ups ferrying in key workers such as nurses working at Great Ormond Street Hospital, porters and maintenance staff, I received a job for pick in Cable Street, E1 for four people going to Holborn, as I turned the corner I was confronted with a “bat man” and “robin” and two ” juglers”! these people were off to give of their free time to entertain underprivileged kids. How great is that! when I asked one of the guys why he was doing it he replied “It’s easy to do nothing, but doing nothing is not an option, so do something, doesn’t have to be money just give of your time? that’s why I do it”……
So that’s when I decided to give. I work on Christmas day with an early morning start 6am, I break for lunch to visit my daughter and son inlaw see my grandaughter then back out in the evening and I give a preportion of my earnings to Great Ormond Street.
So think of me Christmas day when you are doing nothing, sitting in front of the tv, having eaten to much, drunk to much, and most probably spending it with people you don’t like to much! Start doing something…..
I am a big fan of Gerhard Richter abstract art. he inspired some of my early work. I love his use of colour and the techniques he uses to achieve his results. He very rarely uses a brush, he works with a squeegee and different tools to achieve he look.
“With a brush you have control. The paint goes on the brush and you make the mark. From experience you know exactly what will happen. With the squeegee you lose control. Not all control, but some control. It depends on the angle, the pressure and the particular paint I am using.”

The Ferrari gear shift gate has been synonymous and famous to the mark since I can remember.I can recall my first encounter with a 250GTB parked in Mayfair (I must of been no older than 12) and looking inside and admiring the beautiful tan leather interior and the chromed gearshift and gate and thinking wow that’s so cool and eligant the image has stayed with me ever since!
Born out of the 1950’s in the UK the name Cafe racer derives from the biker clubs and gangs that used to gather and congregate in Cafe and race along the roads and duel carriage ways around the UK, the most famous to lend its name to this genre of bike was the Ace Cafe in London.
Lean, simple and dirty (in the cleanest sense) these bikes from the likes of Triumph and Norton were no frills machines and were built for speed unlike our American cousins with their “chopper” bikes all chrome, extended front forks and raised handle bars the racers had very little if any chrome and with no frills!
These bikes now have a huge following of which I’m a big fan their appeal (for me anyway) is in their raw, lean and dirty mean look! you won’t find any bells and chrome whistles on these machines!
